Apostille and document legalisation — how to get it done
What an apostille is, when you need one to set up a company abroad, and how to get one quickly.
When you set up a company, open a bank account or register a branch abroad, you will often be asked to provide apostilled documents.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is an official certificate confirming that a signature or seal on a public document is authentic. It is valid in all countries that have joined the Hague Apostille Convention (over 120 countries).
When do you need an apostille?
- Passport copies and proof of address for overseas registries.
- Powers of attorney for company formation before a notary.
- Company registry extracts when a Danish company sets up a subsidiary abroad.
- Foreign company documents when registering a Danish branch.
The process in Denmark
- The document is certified by a notary (for example, to authenticate a private individual's signature).
- The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues the apostille.
- If required, the document is translated by an authorised translator.
Countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention
These countries require full legalisation through an embassy — a slower process.
